Skimming - one of the fastest growing types of debit card fraud
One of fastest growing debit card fraud activities is through an illegal process called skimming. This is the act of stealing debit or credit card data by reading information on the magnetic stripe of the card. Criminals attach portable electronic devices to ATM or Point of Sale (POS) machines, just over the slot where the card slides through. When a card holder slides their card through the ATM/POS they are actually sliding it through the skimming device. The criminal may have this device attached to the ATM/POS for a few hours until they have captured a volume of card numbers. This, coupled with strategically placed cameras, captures the card data and PIN numbers, which they use to create counterfeit cards to use in ATMS/POS in the future. This type of crime is big business and is often performed by organized crime groups.
Here are some steps you can take when using an ATM machine:
Look for a false panel added over a card reader or to a door access panel. These are attached in such a way that they can be easily removed by hand. If you find, such a device, call the police or notify the financial institution that owns the ATM. Do not touch the device - police may want to dust it for fingerprints.
The removal of a skimming device or false signage will leave evidence that it was there. A sticky residue will remain around the card reader slot or door access panel if something was affixed to that spot and then removed.
Where there is more than one ATM in a vestibule or offsite location, be aware of all out of order signs - some may not have been placed there by the credit union. These are used to ensure that only the altered ATM is available, thereby capturing all transactions for the location.
