Beware of fraud phone calls

We have recently become aware of active phone call scams where fraudsters are posing as Access Credit Union representatives.

These are not actual representatives of Access CU but rather impersonators attempting to take advantage of unsuspecting victims.

This impersonation scam has been in market targeting other financial institutions including other banks and credit union. Here’s what members should watch for:

  • An unexpected phone call from someone claiming to be from Access Credit Union.
    • Caller ID may indicate it’s coming from us (spoofed phone number). The spoofed number may have spelling mistakes or other oddities. For example: Acess CU (note the missing letter in Access).
  • Caller claiming fraudulent activity on your banking account or credit card.
  • Caller stating that you must provide them a code to identify either themselves or you as the member.
  • Caller requesting that you reset and/or create a new online banking password together, which they request you share with them.
  • Caller requesting you send money to yourself via e-Transfer® to secure your profile.
  • Caller requesting specific identification such as taking a photo of your ID or requesting the PIN to your debit card.

Access Credit Union will never ask members to share digital banking passwords or authentication codes. Our representatives will never:

  1. Request any of your one-time passcodes that were provided to you personally via text message, email, or otherwise, as a method of confirming your identity or ours.
  2. Ask you to initiate a transaction or send money to yourself or any other party as a means of securing your banking profile.
  3. Ask you to download a remote access application in order to serve you.
  4. Access your online banking to add payees on your behalf.
  5. Ask you for your online banking password in any way. NEVER SHARE YOUR PASSWORD WITH ANYONE

How can members protect themselves?

  1. Do not provide any of your online banking information—including usernames, passwords, security question answers, your card PIN, or one-time authentication codes—to anyone who contacts you directly.
  2. Do not send a payment or e-Transfer at the request of someone claiming to be from Access Credit Union or any other financial institution.
  3. Do not share the answers to security questions for e-Transfers, if applicable.
  4. Do not share any e-Transfer reference numbers.
  5. If you receive a call from Access Credit Union that sounds suspicious or doesn’t seem right, do not hesitate! End the call immediately contact us directly to report it at 1.800.264.2926.
    1. If it truly is an Access CU representative attempting to contact you, we will understand! Always be vigilant.
  6. Do not provide personal information—including mobile phone numbers and email addresses—on social media. This includes in direct messages and on personal profiles.

Remember: there are other red flags to watch for from other parties (not just those claiming to be from Access Credit Union) including if someone asks you to download a remote access application (i.e. Anydesk) in order to share your screen or asking you to go to a store and buy gift cards.
